Utility company gets out of a hole (the 18th): How it benefited from registering land
Geoff Fance is title research manager at United Utilities, a water and waste-water network provider in the north-west. He has a lot of property to keep his eye on. "We manage 55,000 sets of title deeds, deal with 15,000 title enquiries a year, and we generate around a hundred property transactions per month," he says.
Voluntary registration has made his job "a lot easier - everything's there in one definitive register and plan."
A specific example dealt with some land beyond a road that runs alongside a reservoir. "It was considered lost to the golf course [there], but the land registration process revealed otherwise and cured the title," says Geoff.
"The whole of our registration cost £30,000, which is incredibly good value! United Utilities have capital works of a billion pounds, so we need to protect our assets - thirty k in the scheme of things is nothing!"
Geoff didn't have a bad word to say about Land Registry's service. "In my opinion it's impeccable - they've gone the extra mile. We have a small team and we need that. I speak very highly of them!" |
