Electronic export data

The land registry now licenses the re-use of polygons to local authorities and other government bodies. These polygons can be overlaid on to existing GIS systems and used as part of electronic terriers.

The polygons are suitable for illustrative purposes only. They give an indication of the registered extent of a property; an official copy of the title plan has to be purchased from us for any legal purpose. The polygons are supplied in ESRI shp or mid/mif format.

At present the polygons can be used only for internal business purposes. We hope that the OS copyright issues surrounding the use for external and commercial purposes will soon be resolved.

Local Authorities and other government bodies can easily license polygons from us. Firstly we need to establish the area that the local authority or government body is interested in. To do this we need a list of title numbers (our unique reference number for the land) or, if these aren’t known then we need to know all the previous names of the local authority or government body so that we can search our Index of proprietor’s names for the title numbers. Or we can use an electronic extent of the area if a local authority or government body can provide us with one.

When the land is already registered we can supply polygons that we have created as part of the process of registering the land. These are supplied as a file that can be overlaid onto a GIS and include the Land Registry’s title number as a separate attribute.  We charge £400 for the extraction and £2 per title (plus VAT). The charges are non negotiable.

If the local authority or government body is voluntarily registering land then at the end of the registration we can supply the polygons that we have created as part of the registration. These are supplied as a file that can be overlaid onto a GIS and include the Land Registry’s title number as a separate attribute. These polygons might be subject to PAI. We charge £350 for the extraction and £0.44 per title (plus VAT). These charges are non negotiable.

Local Authorities and other government bodies have to sign a contract, which covers the reuse of these data. We have taken care to ensure that we retain the copyright and IP rights in these data even though we grant the reuse of them.

To apply for a contract please email Commercial Services. You should receive your contract within 20 working days of our receiving your email.
