    Example 3: reduced size photocopies

Picture of a scale box from a plan showing a scale of 1 to 50 when printed on A3 paper

When a plan is photocopied it will often lose its accuracy. This is especially so where it has been reduced in size from A3 to A4.

The scale box shown opposite refers to the scale as '1:50 @ A3'. This would be alright if the plan is at A3 size, but when reduced to A4 it is of no use at all.

The scale (1:50) is acceptable, although the preferred scales are 1/500 or 1/1250 for residential areas and 1/2500 for rural areas. The difficulty comes in knowing for certain that the size of the original plan has been retained. Land Registry staff cannot be expected to measure plans to see if they are a set size (A3) before using the scale.

Land Registry will reject applications where the plan has been reduced but still bears the original scale endorsement.
