Qualification in Land Registration Law and Practice

The Qualification is a distance-learning course run by Land Registry in partnership with The College of Law, the leading provider of legal education in the UK. It's a partnership that ensures academic integrity and professional delivery. By studying for the certificate or diploma you will be hearing the latest on land registration law straight from the horse's mouth. The courses will benefit those new to this area and also the experienced practitioner. With our structured study programme delivered in a supported distance-learning format, you are able to manage your study time in a way that fits in with your busy life.

What are the benefits?

The qualification will bring you and your team right up to date with land registration law in England and Wales, the property law that underpins it and Land Registry's legal and plans practice.

It will give your unqualified staff much greater confidence in their ability to handle instructions, allowing them to take more responsibility and make fewer referrals to qualified staff. This in turn will give them improved job satisfaction.

For qualified staff it will ensure they are completely up to date with the latest developments in law and practice. For your organisation as a whole it will mean improved quality, less outsourcing and lower costs.

What our students say

Locum solicitor Christine Knibb learned “a terrific amount” on the two-year diploma course. “It has given me an in-depth knowledge of the Land Registration Act, including adverse possession,” said Christine. “I think a lot of solicitors have not thought about the implications of the act for registered land and adverse possession.

The course is value for money and I thought the study weekends and revision days  were superb. I would emphasise that anyone was doing the course ought to give up the time to go on those.”

Deborah Colvill was entered for the certificate course when she was appointed as Post-Completions Manager at law firm Howes Percival. “In my day-to-day work I’m constantly asked questions by my staff,” said Deborah. “They might ask me about a particular form to fill in, or fees, or transfers of equity. I’m more confident about answering them now. I have the ‘bible’ – the course book – next to me permanently.”

Nationwide Building Society has put six candidates on the certificate course this year after 11 completed it last year. Sheila Bryan, Team Manager in the Mortgage Service Centre, said this showed how much it was valued.

“Most of us had no legal qualifications so it was deemed appropriate for us,” she said. “When we are registering a charge we need to know the logistics of it – there are certain things that are straightforward and certain things that aren’t.

“The course has given us an in-depth knowledge of what is required by us to deliver our services to our customers. We learned loads – it was very valuable.”
