Strategic objective 1: Service First

Project Acacia

The Acacia vision is for a definitive, consistent and joined-up national infrastructure of property addresses and relevant data with the related mapping that will facilitate major economies, efficiencies and service improvements both in the public sector and throughout the economy.

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) will be considering future structures and responsibilities for realising the Acacia vision.

Project Acacia has now completed its research and is ready to publish its conclusions in a series of project reports. A core issue concerns the structure for developing and maintaining the national address dataset. The reports cover:

  • the technical capability of testing, addressing and mapping datasets
  • the requirements that users would have of an Acacia system
  • the business case for it.

The reports show that there is a sound case for Acacia and that it is viable. However, in order to realise the project’s vision, there are some important institutional and other issues, for example intellectual property, that central government will have to address.
